It's Always Sunny turns to uncharacteristically scattershot squalor when "Charlie's Home Alone"

Charlie first hears a rat scurrying nearby. He coaxes it over, avoiding the traps that he set earlier. He picks up the critter, empathising with what it’s like being caught in a trap. But the rat is just so cute, and tiny, and brown.

A Christmas Story follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker who is desperate to convince his parents that a Red Ryder Range 200 Shot BB gun is the perfect gift for him. The standout scene from this film comes towards the end of the story, when the Parker family's turkey is gobbled up by their next-door neighbor's army of dogs. I love my football, but I would never go through any of that if it guaranteed a win for the boys. Nothing like some classic hijinks from a stupid character to make a half hour fly by. I am very intrigued to see what the second half of this story has to offer.

Charlie's House

One of the worst episodes of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia in 15 years. Watch it once so that you never have to watch it again. Since 10 is absolute perfection, i like to reserve those for truly amazing episodes. So 9's are right there, but just missing something. Wasn't the best episode, but clearly it's more of an experimental episode.

Despite the fact that he’s an adult man, Charlie goes full Home Alone almost immediately. It never once occurs to him that his friends are at the game. Instead of driving to the stadium, he searches everyone’s apartment and then makes his way back to the bar. Soon, two jamokes who resemble the Wet Bandits come knocking at Paddy’s door, leading Charlie to believe that the bar is going to be robbed. He goes into full protection mode, setting up traps all over the bar that resemble Kevin McAllister’s… but are also very much the work of Charlie Kelly. Is Charlie just a grown up Kevin, brain addled with glue and alcohol?

Charlie's Home Alone

Unsurprisingly Charlie steps in the bear trap. He manages to cauterize his heavily bleeding leg, but passes out from the pain for an entire day. When he gains consciousness the game is just starting. Distraught Charlie realizes he hasn't done his rituals when he comes across a rat. Stopping it from going into a rat trap, he takes it in his hands and strokes it, saying he knows now what it feels like to be caught in a trap.

When he wakes up, people outside are booing, so Charlie wants to continue with his colors rituals. Having hung a can of green paint up on one of the strings, Charlie tries to make it fall down. When he finally manages it, the can hits him right in the head and he falls unconscious again. When he wakes up, there is green paint across his face though and people are cheering. Charlie then plans to drink something yellow, trying to get down a glass of beer from the bar, but the glass breaks without Charlie drinking anything. Outside, people are booing again, so Charlie sees no other solution but to drink his piss.

charlie's home alone

The blood and bodily injury are crazy over the top, and people here are saying that like its somehow a poor choice for the show? Blood and gore is nothing new for the Gang. I've been excited for this show since day one.

Always Sunny digs deep into nostalgia with a send up of the 90’s classic Home Alone.

The things he did in this episode take that way too far. In the early seasons there is an episode where he is filling in a form and he list's Paddy's Pub as the prize, because, he thought it said pride. The gang then have to win a dance competition just to keep their own bar.

There are uncharacteristic sequences where the acting feels awkward. At points the choice of music fails to hit that ironic note. The pacing feels like it's from a more traditional sitcom type of show. Some of the camera work feels stalled which humanises the character of Charlie beyond the caricature he is. All of these things combined manage to break the illusion of the show. After a few viewings with some time in between, it still feels like the effect wasn't purposeful, that it wasn't put to good use.

With a plethora of great physical humour and a really funny concept, this is an easily overlooked episode in a season that I think is over-hated. I can't say that about the next episode, which is my least favourite in the show. 13x9 isn't even that awful of an episode, a testament to how good this show is. Your home should be a safe place for children. But each year thousands of children are injured or worse due to accidents in the home.

I live near Philly and think it's awesome it's placed near here. Yes this episode was only Charlie based. However, did anyone realize the WHOLE season alludes to the Eagle's Superbowl win? I think they've mentioned it in every episode this season thus far. This episode isn't Sunny's greatest, but it's adding up to a GREAT season. Stop hating the show you love, it doesn't have one foot in the grave.
